Grammar Schools
General Guidance
Important Note: the following information is relevant for current Year 5 students who will be starting secondary school in September 2025.
Common Application Form (CAF)
To apply for a secondary school place for your child, you must complete and submit the Common Application Form (CAF) to your local council.
This year's CAF will open around 1st September 2024 (when your child starts Year 6), and the deadline for completion will be 31st October 2024.
On the CAF, you need to list, in order of preference, up to 6 schools for which you would like your child to be considered.
You can apply to both state schools and grammar schools.
You must apply through your local council, even if you're applying to schools in another council area.
The local authority will allocate places based on parents' preferences, as well as schools' selection criteria.
This means that listing a particular school as your first choice does not guarantee that you will be offered a place.
However, if you are offered a place for your first-choice school, you cannot turn it down for a lower-ranked choice.
Every school has a different set of oversubscription criteria - schools may prioritise and rank students based on:
entrance test scores (for schools which have entrance tests, i.e. grammar schools),
nearness to the school,
siblings already at the school,
children of staff members at the school, etc.
The 6 schools can be any combination of state and grammar schools, however, we advise you to list at least one state school as a backup option.
Use the official GOV.UK webpage to find your local authority's secondary school admissions form:
Supplementary Information Forms (SIFs)
In some cases, you may need to fill in a Supplementary Information Form (SIF), to provide information that is not collected by the local authority's CAF but is required by a particular school to help with the selection process or otherwise.
For example, some highly-over-subscribed schools ask for proof of residency, so that they can prioritise children living close to the school; similarly, some Catholic schools ask for a certificate of Catholic practice, so that they can prioritise children from practising Catholic families.
Additionally, if a school prioritises children who are eligible for Pupil Premium, Free School Meals, Universal Credit, etc., then you will need to fill in a SIF to provide evidence and details.
Essentially, a SIF is an additional form that you need to submit directly to a secondary school (through the school website) instead of through the local authority. If a school has SIFs, they will be mentioned on the school website. Not all schools have SIFs.
Entrance Exams (11+)
If you are only applying to state schools, then the CAF and SIFs are all you need to be aware of. However, grammar schools are selective, and admission into a grammar school is primarily determined by performance in the school's entrance examinations, aka the "11+".
Every grammar school has some form of entrance examination, where children are given the opportunity to showcase their academic ability through one or more written tests (and sometimes, an interview). Performance in these entrance tests is the main factor in determining which children are offered places at the school.
To save children from having to sit separate exams for every school they are interested in, some grammar schools form associations or 'test groups', whereby a child sits the entrance exams at one school, and the results are shared with the other schools. For example, the CSSE is a group of 10 grammar schools in Essex sharing a single entrance exam; although each school has its own pass mark, admissions criteria, etc.
The timelines and details of different grammar schools' selection processes vary, but the general trend is as follows:
May to July - parents register their children for the entrance examinations
July to August - invitations are sent out with further details on the examinations
September to October - entrance examinations take place
October - exam results are sent out to parents before the CAF deadline, to help parents decide on their choices
31st October - CAF deadline
1st March - National Offer Day
Note that the results sent in October will only be a score or indication that your child has passed or failed.
A failing mark means that your child will not be eligible for a place at the school, so you should NOT list the school in your CAF.
A passing mark does NOT guarantee that your child will be offered a place at the school, only that they will be considered. You can use historical data, as well as information about the school's oversubscription criteria, to predict the likelihood of being offered a place.
